I proceeded from the "Protestant" to the residence of the Consul, but that gentleman was not at home.

I directed Assistant Superintendent Grant to go on board the "Reindeer". He did so, but the Defendant, Mr. Michiels, was not on board.

Up to the present time the Defendant has not been re-apprehended, or any steps been taken in reference to the part taken in the escape by the United States' Consul.

Yesterday, at past 4 o'clock, a case was called on before the Sitting Magistrate, the Honorable G. B. Milton, Hillier, Esqre., and J. C. Leslie, Esq. J.P., in which T. John Middion, Carpenter of the American Ship "Reindeer", was Plaintiff, and E. W. Michiels, Captain of said Ship, Defendant, for violent assault. On the conclusion of the case I was ordered to receive a fine of $50 to the Queen, and twenty-five dollars amends to the Plaintiff, and on asking Captain Michiels for the sum, he said he would not "pay a single cent." At about past 4¼ o'clock I said to Captain Michiels, as he was determined not to pay the fine, to come to gaol, "Be off!"
